ABOUT BOOK AWARDS
Industry book awards matter. In the competitive world of publishing, every recognition counts, especially the more widely known awards and honors. But even smaller awards can make a difference in an author's home locale.  Minimally, snagging a finalist or winner's award infuses an author with additional confidence, something far too many authors lack in this dog-eat-dog world of publishing.

The poem, "Tabula Rasa," included in Things A Cowboy Sees by Rod Miller and published by Port Yonder Press, won the 2012 Spur Award for Poetry.  Rod and PYP are honored to have received this distinguished recognition.

From the WWA (Western Writers of America) website:  Given annually for distinguished writing about the American West, the Spur Awards are among the oldest and most prestigious in American literature. In 1953, when the awards were established by WWA, western fiction was a staple of American publishing. At the time awards were given to the best western novel, best historical novel, best juvenile, and best short story.Since then the awards have been broadened to include other types of writing about the West. Today, Spurs are offered for the best western novel (short novel), best novel of the west (long novel), best original paperback novel, best short story, best short nonfiction. Also, best contemporary nonfiction, best biography, best history, best juvenile fiction and nonfiction, best TV or motion picture drama, best TV or motion picture documentary, and best first novel (called The Medicine Pipe Bearer’s Award).Winners of the Spur Awards in previous years include Larry McMurtry for Lonesome Dove, Michael Blake for Dances With Wolves, Glendon Swarthout for The Shootist, and Tony Hillerman for Skinwalker.

The Grace Awards are a newer and very small faith-based book awards group based initially on reader nominated books, then decided via a double-blind judging system.

Linda Yezak's Give the Lady a Ride was granted the 2011 Grace Award for Romance / Historical Romance.  You can read about the 2011 Grace Awards winning entries here.
